<itunes:summary>More than just an odd's n' sods gathering of B sides and outtakes, And The Swede's newest is a collection of extraordinary songs that fare equally as well as the lucky tunes that made the first album, and with similar stateliness. Rediscovered by The Swede (Matthew Kohnle) in various states of completion on his aging 16 track recorder, these songs, some dating from as far back as 2002, were carefully revisited and completed for this project. The new album follows in the same vein of quiet desperation, solitude and melancholia that informs much of his work. The attention to detail and dynamics, as well as emotional heft is obvious here. The remarkable thing about a “Swede” song is that it is never just a tossed off affair, which would presumably be the case in an album of this sort. Not so. Every song is a universe unto itself, crafted and executed as a complex snapshot of a moment in life, ready to be appreciated on it's own terms and on it's own time. Only it's creator has seen fit to relegate these songs to the sidelines, but we are lucky to have not lost them to time and neglect. From the heartbreaking and slightly dissonant opening chords and haunting flute melody that feature in opener "Frosted Over", we are aware that the road we are traveling will not give immediate cheap gratification, but rather something more important and rewarding; a place and a mood to come back to that invite repeated visitation. You may find yourself reaching for this collection while driving down a quiet, lonely stretch of country highway, or while contemplating the desolation of an empty town at night, or perhaps lamenting a love that is no longer yours. The songs encapsulate irony and resignation, yes, but an undercurrent of something very different runs through each as well. One of my favorite moments is on the final track, "Rosewine". After the storm of the song subsides, the delicate refrain “sweeter than rosewine” filters through the mix, bittersweet and yet hopeful, punctuating this amazing ride with a kind of lyrical shrug. Even if we don’t know exactly what it means, we’ve all felt it. -Joseph Russo June 2009</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This is a collection of live and studio material from the long defunct CT instrumental band Daybed. Collected here is the never before released first studio recordings the band ever made, when they were still known as “Journalism” (featuring guest musician and Journalism member David Gereg). Also included is a ‘bootlegged” live improvisation from one of the band’s Trash American Style (Danbury Connecticut record store no longer open) shows recorded on the fly by Trash’s proprietor Malcolm Tent. This is followed by four unreleased tunes recorded live at SUNY Purchase’s “The Cave” on December 15th 1999, recorded by Alan Zapata, and is among the bands last live performances before disbanding. For the most part, the untitled three song suite that makes up the first section of this podcast, were the first attempts by the band to record. Journalism, an improvisational live band that featured all four members of the soon to be Daybed (as well as David Gereg heard here on drums), had recorded many sessions of unscripted improv material for some months before John Belles, Jason Socci, Nathan Yeager and Matthew Kohnle decided to form the composition based Daybed. This recording bridged the gap, convincing the band to change directions. The first “song” features David Gereg’s drumming, both John Belles and Matt Kohnle’s bass work, Jason Socci’s guitar and Nathan Yeager’s synths, Drum machines, engineering and mixing. Though by the band as nothing more than a sort of “practice run” at creating in a studio together, it nevertheless convinced all but one member of Journalism to take the next step.Recorded sometime in 1998, the band’s first appearance at Malcolm Tent’s wonder emporium, Trash American Style (its a verb) saw the band open up it’s show with an improvised Kraut rock inspired slow burner that only hints at what was to come with 1999’s “2” (see podcast vol. 5). This time the multi instrumentalist band features Matt on Bass, Jason on guitar, Nathan on Bass 6 and effects and John on drums. Recorded by Malcolm Tent himself. Thanks Malcolm. And that brings us to the last four selections included here. Recorded at one of the bands last performances before disbanding, these represent the only recordings of the last four tracks the band had written. “Someone Calling Mother” began the show, and rises out of an analog synth/ lap steel fog into a triumphant anthem. It is followed by the decidedly more somber “Trees Are down’ in which each of the four members perform a long winding melodic progression on their respective instruments and replace it as the songs end with vocals. Though two of the band members were too nervous to actually sing, or so it would seem. “How the Colors Change the Sky” follows with a more sultry, yet synthetic groove based around Nate’s trusty 808 drum machine. Finally, “The Machinery”, which was the only Daybed song to actually feature lyrics, and perhaps offers a hint at where the band could have taken things had they stayed together. Making use of Nathan Yeager’s vocoded vocals, this cute, somewhat poignant tune about a robot that admits that “it gets so hard to love yourself” ended the set on a rather anthemic note. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Big and dreamy, and definitely up to the challenge of filling an airplane hanger with monolithic, delay sobbing guitar melodies, Valdosta Georgia’s Major Barger delivers the goods on their Fleur De Lis EP. I am struck immediately by the seemingly contradictory realization that this band can do “enormous” and “gentle” at the same time. Their sound is a slow burning one- insistent melodies layered thoughtfully with delay, and liberal doses of static, which incredibly, never seems to overwhelm the song. Post Rock is implied, with moments that recall the first Tortoise record, or Mogwai, but there is clearly a more melodic intent here and a refreshing spacey-ness that is only buoyed by the production. This EP often sounds like you are floating high above it, hearing it loud and clear from far below, but digging more on it’s reverberation off the clouds surrounding you. Yeah, and it’s real good with pot, too. "Major Barger = 3 friends who, post-graduation, ended up working on 3 different floors of a University library. Andy had a handful of half-finished songs and a roomful of recording gear. Mike had spent his early years in the hardcore scene, but had quieted down considerably. Chris had an odd fascination with the delicate art of delay pedals. To counter the boredom and repetitiveness of their work lives they got together and layered sounds. This is what they made; this is the fleur-de-lis EP."Or so the band tells it. This EP, which is already floating about and available from the bands own myspace, makes a fine addition to our podcast series. 1. If I Had the Key, I’d Be A Locksmith2. Know Drone3. Protect Me and I’ll Protect You4. Sorry For The Delay5. Clouds Blackouts (Final Mix)6. <itunes:summary>Daybed’s “2”, a sprawling 20 minute electronic maelstrom of music, was ultimately a brief detour in direction for the band. Obsessed with late sixties, early seventies German electronic artists such as Cluster, Kraftwerk, Neu! and quite audibly here, early Tangerine Dream, the band created the twenty-plus minute suite of music as an homage to their kraut rock influences. The piece, recorded in 1999 at Mercy College in White Plains NY by Alan Zapata, came to be as the result of a broken leg. As the broken leg belonged to the band’s most able drummer, it put them at a severe disadvantage with regards to live work. The band had a rather important show scheduled to open for Low, one of the group’s favorite bands. Rather than cancel, Daybed decided to write and perform an entirely new set of music for this show; one that wouldn’t necessarily need a live drummer. Having spent a period of a few months refining and playing the piece, the band decided to record it for possible release. While “2” sounds much like an improvised piece of music, it was actually quite composed. Instruments used included numerous vintage synths such as the Moog Opus 3, ARP Axe, and minimoog, an antique oscillator run through a roland space echo, guitar modified with synth pedal, a roland drum machine and even a live flute, manipulated with filters and looping pedals. Most of what is heard on this recording was performed live in the studio, with minor embellishments overdubbed later. This is the first time this music has been available anywhere, as the band more or less abandoned the recording when they eventually changed direction, yet again. DAYBED 2:John Belles, Nathan Yeager, Matt Kohnle and Jason SocciRecorded by Alan Zapata at Mercy College in 1999.</itunes:summary>

The side long “Mr Kitty’s Happy Day”, the classic “Tune in Tokyo” and the better than you remember “A Bird Will Say Anything To Get Out of his Cage”.As this release was originally pressed on Vinyl, and the original DAT has gone missing, we have re-mastered some fresh 32bit transfers from clean copies done by Carl Saff in Chicago (Carl has mastered many records, including “and the Swede”, though Carl simply provided the transfers here and is not responsible for the actual mastering).Original Notes:side a: mr kitty’s happy dayside b: tune in tokyo a bird will say anything to get out of his cagerecorded july-august of 1998onto hardisk by nathan and johnmixed by the bandall songs ©1998 moticuss musicSM-228acetonetop-5 fenderrhodesstage73 moogprodigy minimoog rickenbacker4001 guildsb202 jerryjonesbass6 ovationdelux prs yamaha&ludwigdrums kallistatablemarimba rolandtr808 ampegreverbrocket fenderbandmaster fenderbassman carvinprobass300 peaveytko115 rolandspaceecho 3mstremuluslune danelectrotapeecho</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Recorded in 1999, this radio broadcast bootleg features the long defunct instrumental quartet Daybed at their best. Recorded in between the release of their 10” ep and their 12” Ep, it features tunes from both. Most important is the inclusion of two never before recorded songs, and a stellar version of “A Pirate With No One to Hold” (the last song here) that rivals the previously released version from the bands long out of print “Burn One” session.Enjoy!</itunes:summary>
